alliteration = start with the same letter or sound allusion = refering without mentioning the source allegory = having a deeper meaning (animal farm) assonance = similar vowel sounds repeated in a sentence (mellow wedding bells) ceasura = pause in a sentence to grab attention character = the person responsible for the thoughts and actions connotation = the feeling a word or object gives you consonance = the repetition of the same consonant in 1 sentence (linger longer languar) couplet = 2 sentences belonging to each other. they rhyme or have the same rythm denotation = the dictionary meaning of a word conflict = 1. external: 2 people disagree. 2. internal: conflict with yourself dialogue = exchange of language between 2 or more people enjambment = breaking of a line of verse without using punctuation expression = phrase not literally used (raining cats and dogs) figurative language = when words together don't mean what they mean seperately. (collective name for simile, metaphor, imagery, alliteration, personification, onomatopoeia and hyperbole) free verse = verse made with freedom. often no rhyme or pattern foreshadow = give a hint that sth is going to happen later hyperbole = an intentional overstatement, not literally. (said it a million times) iambic metre = a rythm of a poem. (unstressed - stressed - unstressed - stressed) idiom = expression imagery = when the writer has used figurative language. irony = a form of humour. say sth but mean the complete opposite. ('I have to work.' 'Oh how nice!) lyric/ lyrical = when sth expresses the feelings of the writer in a beautiful way. metaphor = phrase with an underlying meaning to compare sth. (als een kip zonder kop) metre = rythmic structure of a (line of) verse monologue = conversation spoken by a single speaker. Others hear it mood = a state of mind or emotion a story/play gives the audience narrative = structure of events in a story onomatopoeia = imitation of a sound (oink, tik-tok, woof) oxymoron = combination of words with contrast (sweet sorrow, pretty ugly, old news) parody = writing or play in which you can recognize a familiar situation or style of a famous person personification = giving human abilities to non-living things plot = main events of a story presented by the writer point of view = the way a story is writter. (1st person's p.o.v. = I 3th = he) pun = phrase with ambiguety with a humorous effect (I often go to the dentist so i know the drill) refrain = a phrase or verse repeated at intervals throughout a song or poem (end of stanza) rhyme = poem/verse having a regular correspondence of sounds at the end of lines setting = environment where a story takes place simile = phrase where 2 things that have nothing in common are compared to each other, using as or like sonnet = poem of 14 lines. a-b-a-b c-d-c-d e-f-e-f g-g stanza = couple of sentences with the same rythm that belong to each other (alinea of a verse) syllable = used to organize and count speech sounds symbolism = the use of symbols to express ideas. give them symbolic meanings that are different from their literal meaning. (the world a stage and all men and women are players) theme = the central ideas of a story (death, revenge, action) tone = interpretation of a written piece of text. the writer's attitude towards the reader. verse = a metrical line in a poem, one line of poetry aside = telling sth to the audience while you're in a play prose = piece of text which is not poetry soliloquy = in theater, where a character speaks to himself protaganist = main character
