The process through which one "looks within," to observe and record the contents of one's own mental life.=Introspection Theory concerned with how behavior changes in response to different configurations of stimuli (rewards & punishments), without using mentalistic terms.=Behaviorist Theory A type of theorizing (Kant) in which effects or consequences of a process are observed, followed by deriving the process underlying the observed effects=Transcendental Method The storage system in which information is held while that information is being worked on.=Working Memory A relative simple procedure used for measuring working memory's holding capacity. In newer studies, a more complex version is used.=Span Test A system of mental resources used for holding information, for a relatively short duration, in an easily accessible form.=Working-memory System The hypothesized director of the working-memory system, is needed for any interpretation or analysis and directing which information gets stored where.=Central Executive One of the low-level assistants hypothesized as being part of the working-memory system, fills the phonological buffer.=Articulatory Rehearsal Loop Covert speech in which one goes through the motions of speaking, or perhaps forms a detailed motor plan for speech movements, but without making any sound.=Subvocalization A passive storage device that serves as part of the articulatory rehearsal loop. This buffer is loaded by means of subvocalization.=Phonological Buffer Part of the working-memory system that is used to store visual or spatial representations, including visual images.=Visuospatial Buffer Asking a research participant to speak or mime speech while doing some other task to prevent subvocalization.=Concurrent Articulation Task The study of the biological basis for cognitive functioning.=Cognitive Neuroscience A disorder characterized by an inability to control the muscles needed for ordinary speech.=Anarthria The branch of psychology concerned with the relation between various forms of brain dysfunction and various aspects of mental functioning.=Neuropsychology
