Vocabulary CHAPTER 1 To scold= to speak angrily to someone because they have done something wrong. Fretful= anxious and unhappy Yearningly= yearn to do something; to want something very much with a feeling of sadness Resentful= angry and upset about a situation which you think is unfair Neglected= not giving enough care/attention to something or someone Startled= suddenly surprised or frightened Accustomed= if something is accustomed for you, you’ve experienced it often enough for it to seem normal to you. To elude= to not be caught by someone Disdain= when you dislike someone or something and think that they do not deserve respect Incomprehensible= something that is impossible to understand Bleak= cold and not attractive Hostile= unfriendly/unpleasant and not suitable for living Awe= feeling of great respect but also fear Disgust= strong feeling of dislike To retaliate= to do something bad to someone because they have done something bad to you Despair= feeling of having no hope/ to have no hope Ramshackle= a building which is in a very bad condition To postpone= to arrange for something to happen at a later time To loiter= to stand in a place or walk slowly around without any purpose To lure= to persuade someone to go somewhere or do something by offering them something exciting. Obscenities= things that are sexually shocking Tardiness= not arriving, occurring, acting, or done at the scheduled, expected, or usual time Paternal= like a father Kin= members of your family Vindictive= intending to harm or upset somebody who has harmed or upset you Deprived of= not having enough food CHAPTER 2 Envious = wishing that you had what someone else has (jealousy) Reluctantly= not wanting to do something Barrenness= unproductiveness Apprehension= anxious feeling about something that you are going to do Obstinacy= Fixedness in will, opinion, or resolution that cannot be shaken at all, or only with great difficulty To evade= to avoid something or someone, especially in a dishonest way To dissuade= to persuade someone not to do something Cautiously= taking care to avoid risks or danger To adjust= to change something so that it works better, fits better or is more suitable. Sewage= waste water and waste from toilets Ignorant= not polite Incredulous= not able to believe something CHAPTER 3 Premeditated= bad action, unpleasant remark etc has been deliberately planned Concealed= to not tell someone about something, especially because you are ashamed of it or worried about it Feigned= to pretend to have a particular feeling To justify= to show that there is a good reason for something, especially something that other people think is wrong To secularize= to make something less religious, or to stop it from being controlled by religion Boundary= a line that divides two areas or forms an edge around an area. Chores= boring jobs that you must do. To dodge= to move quickly to avoid someone or something A stroke= a medical condition in which blood is suddenly blocked and cannot reach the brain, or in which a blood vessel in the brain breaks, often causing a loss of the ability to speak or to move particular muscles Paralyzed/paralyzes= unable to move your body or part of it, usually because of an injury or illness Charity= an organization to which you give money so that it can give money and help to people who are poor or ill, or who need advice and support Anxious= very scared feeling, terrified. Squalor= dirty and unpleasant conditions that people live or work in Apprehensive= slightly worried or nervous To loathe= slightly worried or nervous Timidly= shy CHAPTER 5 Solicitude= behaviour that shows you care about someone’s health, feelings, safety etc Lopsided= not equal Eternal= continuing for ever or for a very long time Doomed= to make someone or something certain to fail, be destroyed, be extremely unhappy etc Roaming= the ability to connect to the Internet or to use your mobile phone when you are travelling, without having to make long Temporarily= existing, done, or used for only a limited period of time To collide= if two things collide they crash into each other To reveal= to let something become known, for example a secret or information that was previously not known Indefinitely= for a period of time that has no fixed end Thoroughly= very much, very careful To fend off= to defend yourself against an attack or criticism To extol= to praise someone or something in a very enthusiastic way Application= a formal request for permission to do or have something To evaporate= to disappear Futile= unsuccessful or useless CHAPTER 6 Sassy= showing no respect Heartily= in an enthusiastic way To bolster= to make something stronger or more effective Charitable= intended to help people who are poor or ill, or who need advice and support Indifference= lack of interest or sympathy Conspicuous= very noticeable or easy to see, especially because of being unusual or different To consent= to agree to do something To evade= to avoid accepting or dealing with something that you should do/ to avoid answering a question Congregation= the group of people who regularly worship at a particular church Allegiance= strong loyalty to a person, group, idea, or country Infancy= the time when you are a baby or a very young child Sonorously= a sound that is sonorous is deep and strong in a pleasant way To bellow= to shout very loudly CHAPTER 7 To chant= to keep shouting or singing a word or phrase many times The pail= the bucket To leash= a lead for a dog, so to leash is to hold a dog (lead the dog) The bleakness= a bleak place/thing is cold and unfriendly and has no pleasant features To grow conscious= Idleness= lazy Baffled= if a problem, someone’s behaviour etc baffles you, you cannot understand it or solve it Contemptuous= showing that you do not respect someone or something at all Remote= not likely to happen aspiration= something that you want to achieve, or the wish to achieve something collision= an accident in which a person or vehicle that is moving crashes into something heedless= not realizing that a situation may be dangerous, not paying attention CHAPTER 8 To reconsider= to think again about a decision in order to decide whether you should change it To compel= to force someone to do something, or to get something from someone using force Whimpering= to say something in a voice that expresses pain, fear, or sadness Dismay= the feeling of being very worried, disappointed, or sad about something surprising or shocking that has happened Appalled= offended or shocked very much by something, because it is extremely unpleasant or bad Amazement= a feeling of being very surprised To increase= to become larger in amount or number Determined= not willing to let anything prevent you from doing what you have decided to do To deliver= to give a formal talk to a group of people, or to give something to someone To caution= to tell someone about a danger or problem that they need to know about or avoid. In ordinary speech, it is more usual to say that you warn someone CHAPTER 9 Contempt= a feeling that someone or something is unimportant and deserves no respect Scorn= a feeling that someone or something is not good enough to deserve your approval or respect To dissemble= to hide your real thoughts, feelings, or intentions Artificial= made by people and used instead of something natural Disturbed= affected by mental or emotional problems, usually because of bad experiences in the past To polish= to rub the surface of something in order to make it shine To nod= to move your head downwards and upwards as a way of saying hello, goodbye, thank you etc Averted = to prevent something bad or harmful from happening Avoid= to try to prevent something from happening or not to go near someone To beckon= to signal to someone to come towards you CHAPTER 10 Livid= extremely angry Placating= to stop someone feeling angry /offended by being nice to them or by giving them what they want Subservience= too willing to obey other people/ considered less important than someone else Idle= doing nothing Unerringly= always right or accurate Immobility= not moving/ unable to move Repugnant= extremely unpleasant or offensive Thievery= stealing To retaliate= to do something harmful or unpleasant to someone because they have done something harmful or unpleasant to you Restraint= something that holds you and physically controls your movements, often to protect your safety Tentatively= not definite, or not certain Misdemeanour= an action that is bad or wrong, but not in a serious way Rigged= to influence something such as an election in a dishonest way in order to produce a particular result To circumvent= to find a way of avoiding a rule or law that limits you, especially using a clever trick that does not break the law Pliable= easy to persuade or influence Cagey= not saying much about something, because you do not want people to know very much CHAPTER 11 To revel= to celebrate or enjoy yourself in a lively and noisy way, especially by singing, dancing, and drinking alcohol Cautiously= in a careful way to avoid problems and danger To fathom= to understand something complicated or mysterious Flabbergasted= very surprised or shocked Rage= a very strong feeling of anger Bootlegger= to make or sell something illegally, especially music or alcohol Vicinity= the area near a particular place CHAPTER 12 Aimlessly= without any particular purpose or plan Trivial= not very important, serious, or valuable To devastate= to seriously damage or completely destroy something/ to make someone feel shocked Indignant= angry because of an unfair situation or someone’s unfair behaviour Latent= something that is latent exists but is not obvious and has not developed yet To conceal= to prevent someone from seeing or knowing your feelings To hover= to stay somewhere because you are waiting to do something or because you cannot decide what to do To jeopardize= to risk damaging or destroying something important
