Far-fetched = very unlikely to be true, and difficult to believe Laboured = needing a lot of effort, often because someone is tired Stilted = (of a person's behaviour or way of speaking or writing) too formal and not smooth or natural Graphic = very clear and powerful Refined = A refined substance has been made pure by removing other substances from it Evoke = to make someone remember something or feel an emotion Grotesque = strange and unpleasant, especially in a silly or slightly frightening way Gripping = describes something that is so interesting or exciting that it holds your attention completely Poignant = causing or having a very sharp feeling of sadness Affected = artificial and not sincere Implausible = difficult to believe, or unlikely Tedious = boring Absorbing = describes something that is very interesting and keeps your attention Trite = expressed too often to be interesting or seem sincere accurate = correct, exact and without any mistakes To give rise (to) = to cause Cloak = a loose outer piece of clothing without sleeves, which fastens at the neck, and is worn instead of a coat Euphemism = a word or phrase used to avoid saying an unpleasant or offensive reasons Obscenity = a very offensive or sexually shocking word or sentence (High) echelon a particular level or group of people within an organization such as an army or company Cognition = when you
