blurb = a short text, usually printed on the back cover of a book, describing what the book is about and sometimes including quotes from critics poignant = moving and sad chronicle = description of a sequence of events acclaimed = praised by the public compelling = very interesting and engaging lugubrious = rather dark, mournful and gloomy macabre = often cruel or disgusting, concerned with death chilling = causing great fear page-turner = powerful story that keeps you interested insight = the ability to understand what something is really like gripping = so interesting or exciting that it holds your attention totally enigmatic = mysterious breathtaking = amazing wry = in the face of a bad situation evocative = calling up images and memories eponymous = who has the same name as the title of the book protagonist = main character engaging = pleasant and interesting journal = a written record of what you have done each day learning journal = a publication containing academic articles, published at regular intervals memoir = a written record of a person's own life, typically by a politician or military figure encyclopedia = a book or set of books containing articles arranged in alphabetical order, dealing with the whole of human knowledge or part of it anthology = a collection of, for example, poems or short stories by different authors manual = a technical book with instructions logbook = a book that records events and times compulsive reading/can't put down = difficult to stop once you've started informative = gives a lot of information ahead of its time = contained ideas that no one else had yet thought of or discussed at that time product of its time = was a reflection of that time lightweight = not complex (slightly negative) bedtime reading = nice to read in bed heavy going = difficult to read get into = become involved/engage with readership = number of people who read them
