metaphor = a comparison without 'as' 'like' or 'than (she is an angel) simile = a comparison with 'as' 'like' or 'than' (she sings like an angel) connotation = an idea or feeling suggested by a word in addition to its literal meaning paragraph = a group of lines in a prose text that belong together stanza = a group of lines in a poem that belong together symbol = something that is what it is, but also stands for something else.
