Name the 5 climates on Earth = tropical climate, desert climate, moderate maritime climat, continental climate, polar climate. Where are the areas at low latitude? = Areas around the equator. Which climates are at low latitude? =Tropical climate and desert climate Which climates are at high latitude? =Moderate maritime climate, continental climate, polar climate Describe tropical climate = Near the equator, with temperatures always above 18 degrees Celsius and rainfall in every season. Describe desert climate = a climate in areas where it is mostly hot and dry. Describe moderate maritime climate = a climate such as in the Netherlands, with mild winters and cool summers and precipitation throughout the year. Describe continental climate = a climate with large differences between temperatures in summer and winter. Describe polar climate = a climate in areas with temperatures in summer below 0 degrees Celsius. To be found at the poles. How is the latitude measured? = In degrees. Why is it colder at a higher latitude than at lower latitude (2 reasons) ? = 1 The sun is at an angle and doesn't shine straight down. 2 The sun's rays take longer to penetrate the atmosphere. Why is it colder the higher you go get? = Example altitude 1000 meter higher, temperature decrease by 6 degrees Celcius = the sun's rays must warm up the Earth's surface first before they can warm up the air. Why does the position of the sun changes? = The earth revolves around the sun at an axial tilt. On which dates is the sun directly over the equator? = March 21 and September 21 What creates the difference between summer and winter? = The changing of the sun's position creates big differences in temperature throughout the year. Describe the water cycle = The sun evaporates water. Water vapour rises, cools and condenses into clouds from which it rains. Precipitation is formed continuously keeping rivers flowing. What are the 5 forms of precipitation? = rain, hail, snow, mist and frozen rain. When does precipitation occur (name 2)?= 1. convectional rainfall and 2. relief rainfall. When does convectional rainfall occur? = rain due to air rises because it's warm. When does relief rainfall occur? = Air is blown against a mountain Describe the Dutch climate = a moderate maritime climate, with mild winters, cool summers and precipitation throughout the year. Give 3 reasons for the moderate maritime climate in the Netherlands = 1. latitude, 2. the predominant westerly wind, 3. its location at sea. What do Meteorologists use to make weather forecast? =1. weather stations, 2. weather balloons,3. Satellites, 4. weather ships. What are the 3 weather elements? = precipitation, temperature and wind. What is the difference in climate in the Netherlands? = In the north colder climates and the south warmer climates What is the difference in the summer in the Netherlands? = In summer, the east of the Netherlands is warmer than the west. Where does the most precipitation fall in the Netherlands? = in the Veluwe (900 mm) and in the South of Limburg (900 mm). Where does the least precipitation fall in the Netherlands? = The least amount falls in Zeeland (700 mm). Which wind predominates in the Netherlands? = There's a predominant westerly wind and it blows hardest in the coastal area. What influences the weather (name 4)? = 1. Latitude, 2. the influence of the sea, 3. the direction of the wind 4. the differences in altitude When may smog occurs? = When there's no wind and the sun shines. What could indicate climate change? =Temperature rise with few degrees over the last couple of years and an increase of precipitation in the form of heavy (tropical) rainfall.
